In order to ensure that students at Anytown Elementary School library are able to locate and access information and materials, they will receive bibliographic instruction: understanding the Dewey Decimal Classification System and how to utilize the library's OPAC.
Procedures:
Visual guides to aid in the use of the OPAC should be posted by first day of school
Visual guides to aid in the locating of materials by Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) should be posted by the first day of school
Basic instruction of the OPAC, such as how to do a basic catalog search, should begin in September
Lessons on the DDC should be located and modified if necessary; original lesson creation is also encouraged
Instruction of the ten divisions of the DDC should begin in October.
Lessons on the features of the OPAC should be located and modified if necessary; original lesson creation is also encouraged
Advanced instruction of the OPAC should begin in December (grades 5 and up)
Advanced instruction of the DDC should begin in February (grades 5 and up)
Lessons taught should be archived with notes for improvement for later use
Student volunteers should use acquired knowledge of DDC to help re-shelve books (grades 5 and up)
Keep portfolio of student progress of learned skills.
Practice opportunities should be provided for using the features of the OPAC from January to June
Practice opportunities should be provided in finding materials based on DDC from February to June
Article which discusses using DDC to encourage deeper thought on current social issues

Dewey Decimal Hotlist for Librarians
This site contains links to DDC lists, URL's by Dewey number, WebQuests, tutorials, and professional resources. The resources serve a variety of academic levels and needs.
LM_NET Dewey Decimal System Wiki
This wiki contains many printable documents, such as brochures, posters and games. There are also lesson ideas and presentations to teach the DDC.
